Yes, you can watch Bluesky on your TV. Skyscraper runs on Apple TV as part of the same free download as the iPhone app, and it turns your feed into something you can leave on: one post at a time drifting on screen, a wall of photos, or a channel of Bluesky videos playing back to back.

It is deliberately not the phone app on a big screen. Nobody reads a timeline from the couch. At ten feet you hold about one idea on screen, so this is an ambient window into your feed where reading is optional and looking is the point.

The Three Modes

Oscillate

The ambient mode, named for what a skyscraper does: sway slowly without going anywhere. One post sits in the center, still and readable, while soft blurred shapes drift behind it. It shows photos, videos, text posts, and quote and link cards. Long posts shrink to fit rather than getting cut off with an ellipsis you cannot tap.

Replies are skipped in every mode, because out of their thread they are half a conversation. Oscillate checks for new posts on a timer, every few minutes, so you can leave it running all evening and it keeps up. It also keeps the Apple TV screen saver from taking over while it is on screen.

Media Wall

A grid of photos and videos, four across. Captions appear only on the tile you have focused, so the wall stays a wall. Click a tile to fill the screen with it. The wall loads fresh posts when you open it, rather than shuffling tiles underneath you while you browse.

Channel

The one mode with sound. Videos from your source play back to back with no black gaps between clips, like a TV channel made from your feed. A lower-third caption with the author and post text introduces each clip and fades after three seconds; pause and it stays up, so a paused channel never looks frozen. As it plays, Channel keeps paging back through older posts to find more videos, and only wraps to the start when the feed has nothing older.

Choosing What to Show

The mode picker has a row of sources. Every mode works with every source.

  • Following – your home timeline.
  • Your saved feeds – the custom feeds you have saved on Bluesky appear automatically.
  • One specific account – type a handle and Skyscraper checks it exists before using it. A channel made from a single photographer's or a news account's posts is a good use of a TV. Recent accounts are kept in a row for one-click switching, up to eight.
  • A hashtag – posts actually tagged with it, latest first, not every post that happens to mention the word. Type it with a leading #, or switch the entry sheet to Hashtag.

Long-press the custom account or hashtag box to choose another or remove it. These choices are stored on the TV itself, since Bluesky has no record for "a feed of one person".

Open Any Post on Your iPhone

tvOS has no web browser, and the TV app does not post, so every post has a handoff instead. Click any post and a QR code appears. Scan it with your iPhone's camera and the post opens in Skyscraper on your phone (install it there too), where you can like, reply or share it. For link posts there is a second code that opens the linked page itself.

While the QR screen is open, the mode pauses: no auto-advance, no next video. Press Menu to close it.

Signing In with a Bluesky App Password

The TV app signs in with your handle and a Bluesky app password, not your main password. An Apple TV has no browser for the usual sign-in flow, and an app password is the safer thing to leave on a device the whole household shares: you can revoke it from your phone at any time without changing your real password.

To make one:

  1. On your phone or computer, open Bluesky's settings and find the app passwords section.
  2. Add a new app password and give it a name you will recognize, such as "Apple TV".
  3. Copy the generated password. Bluesky only shows it once.

Then, on the TV, enter your handle and the app password. You do not have to type with the remote: when the keyboard comes up, your iPhone offers to do the typing, so you can paste the password straight in.

After that you stay signed in. The session is kept in the TV's keychain, and the app is built to survive the realities of a living-room device: if tvOS has closed it overnight and it launches before Wi-Fi reconnects, it retries until your feeds and posts load rather than leaving you with an empty picker. Only a revoked app password, or a session left unused long enough to expire, signs you out.

Signing out

On the mode picker, select your handle in the top-right corner of the header, then confirm Sign Out. The accounts and hashtags you saved as sources are cleared with it, which is what you want before handing the TV to someone else.

What It Does Not Do

  • No posting, liking or replying. It is read-only. The QR code is how you act on a post.
  • No DMs or notifications. A TV is a shared screen, and the app shows only the posts from the source you picked.
  • No reading threads. Replies are filtered out of every mode.

If you want the full client, it is on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. The TV is for having Bluesky on in the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Bluesky app for Apple TV?

Yes. Skyscraper runs on Apple TV as part of the same free download as the iPhone app. It needs tvOS 17.6 or later and is designed as an ambient display of your feed rather than a full client.

Can I post to Bluesky from my Apple TV?

No. Skyscraper for Apple TV is read-only. To reply, like or share, click a post to get a QR code, scan it with your iPhone, and the post opens in Skyscraper there.

Why does the Apple TV app ask for an app password?

An Apple TV has no browser for a normal sign-in flow, and an app password can be revoked from your phone without touching your main password. Create one in Bluesky's settings under app passwords and use it only on the TV.

Does it show my DMs or notifications on the TV?

No. It shows posts from the source you choose: Following, a saved feed, one account or a hashtag. Direct messages and notifications are not shown.

How do I sign out of Bluesky on Apple TV?

On the mode picker, select your handle in the top-right of the header and confirm Sign Out. This also clears the custom accounts and hashtags saved on the TV.
