How Does Bluesky Count Characters?

Bluesky counts graphemes – the characters you see on screen – not bytes or code points. That matters for anything outside basic English:

  • Emoji count as one. Even a family emoji built from several code points is a single grapheme.
  • Accented letters count as one. An "é" is one character whether it's stored as one code point or two.
  • Every script counts the same. Japanese, Arabic and Hindi text get 300 visible characters just like English, which makes Bluesky posts relatively roomy in languages with dense scripts.

The catch is a second, hidden limit: the post's text can't exceed 3,000 bytes of UTF-8. Ordinary text never gets close. A post made mostly of complex emoji can, because a single multi-person emoji can take 20+ bytes. If the counter says you have room but the post won't send, that's why.

Developers: graphemes are also why you can't just use len() or .length to check a post. Use a grapheme-aware splitter, and remember that facets index into the text by byte offset, not character position.

Yes, but usually less than you'd expect in the official app. When you paste a long URL, the app shortens the visible text to something like example.com/articles/how-t... and stores the full address in a link facet. You're charged for the shortened text, not the whole URL.

Two caveats:

  • Third-party tools vary. A scheduler or bot that posts the URL as plain text uses up its full length. If you schedule Bluesky posts through a tool, check how it handles links.
  • Link cards are free. The preview card under a post doesn't count toward the 300. Many people paste the link, wait for the card, then delete the URL from the text entirely to get all 300 characters back. The card keeps working.

What Are Bluesky's Image Limits?

As of October 2026, a post can carry up to 10 images at up to 2 MB each. Both numbers changed this year: the per-image size doubled from 1 MB in April 2026 (app version 1.121), and the image count rose from 4 to 10 in June 2026 (version 1.123), with a new carousel for posts with five or more images.

  • The app resizes for you. The official app compresses large photos to fit, so you rarely see the size limit. Tools posting through the API have to do that themselves.
  • 2 MB means 2,000,000 bytes. A file your computer reports as "1.95 MB" may be counted in binary units and actually be over.
  • Common formats work. JPEG, PNG and WebP are the safe choices. Animated GIFs come through the GIF picker rather than as uploaded images.
  • Every image gets alt text. Up to 2,000 characters each. Our guide to adding alt text on Bluesky covers how to write good descriptions.

Older guides and some scheduling tools still say four images and 1 MB. Those numbers are out of date.

What Are Bluesky's Video Limits?

As of October 2026: one video per post, up to 10 minutes and 300 MB. Bluesky raised the limit from 3 minutes in late August 2026 and said uploads became two to three times faster at the same time.

  • Verify your email first. Video upload requires a verified email address on your account.
  • No mixing. A post can have images or a video, not both.
  • Daily caps exist. Bluesky also limits how much video one account can upload per day; normal use won't hit it.
  • It's re-encoded. Bluesky processes uploads for streaming, so upload a clean, high-quality file rather than a pre-compressed one.
  • Captions help. Videos support caption files and alt text, which matters for the many people who scroll with sound off.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bluesky character limit?

A Bluesky post can be up to 300 characters. Bluesky counts graphemes, the characters you see, so an emoji counts as one. There is also a hidden 3,000-byte cap on the raw text that very emoji-heavy posts can hit.

How many images can you post on Bluesky?

As of October 2026, up to 10 images per post, raised from 4 in June 2026. Each image can be up to 2 MB, and you cannot mix images and video in the same post.

How long can Bluesky videos be?

As of October 2026, videos can be up to 10 minutes long and 300 MB, after an increase from 3 minutes in August 2026. A post can contain one video.

Do links count toward the Bluesky character limit?

Yes, but the official app shortens long URLs in the visible text and stores the full address in the link itself, so a long link usually costs far fewer than its full length. Tools that post through the API may count the full URL.

What is the Bluesky alt text limit?

Alt text can be up to 2,000 characters per image in the Bluesky app. Most good descriptions need far less.

What are the Bluesky bio and display name limits?

A display name can be up to 64 characters and a bio up to 256 characters. Both count graphemes, like posts.

Composing in Skyscraper
