Short answer: Bluesky passed 47 million registered accounts in mid-October 2026. Bluesky still doesn't publish monthly or daily active users, so any MAU figure you see is a third-party estimate. Those estimates still disagree with each other by more than a factor of two.

A Correction to Our Own Numbers
Our August report rounded the registered count to about 47 million and described growth of roughly 1.5 million accounts a month. The counters don't support that. Going from 41.41 million at the end of 2025 to about 46.9 million in early October is about 5.5 million accounts in just over nine months, or roughly 600,000 a month, and 47 million wasn't reached until mid-October. We were too high on both, and this report uses the counted figures.
The direction of our argument doesn't change: registrations are still growing steadily, and daily activity still isn't rising with them. But the growth is slower than we said.
Why There's Still No Good MAU Number
Monthly active users is the number people search for most, and the one nobody outside Bluesky can measure properly. Estimates come from two kinds of method:
- Counting accounts that write. Anyone can watch the firehose and count distinct accounts that post, like, follow or repost in 30 days. That's precise, but it misses everyone who only reads.
- App and web traffic panels. These try to count readers, but they model the whole market from a sample and are weakest for a young, international, heavily third-party-client audience like Bluesky's.
The first method undercounts and the second guesses, which is why published Bluesky MAU estimates still range so widely. And the gap is growing: group chat messages, private bookmarks and passive reading don't produce any public records, so more engaged readers can look less active to outside counters. What to Take From October
- Registrations: steady, slower than the headlines implied. About 600,000 new accounts a month this year, without a big migration moment.
- Active users: unknown, probably flat. Nothing in the observable public activity suggests a sustained jump this autumn.
- 48 million is plausible by the end of the year at the current pace. It's a milestone for registrations, not for audience.
Practical Guidance
- Plan against active users, not accounts. If you're deciding whether Bluesky is worth your time as a creator or brand, the reachable audience is a few million people a day, not 47 million.
- Quote sources and dates. "47 million registered accounts (October 2026, third-party counter)" is accurate. "47 million users" isn't.
- Watch your own numbers. Your reach and replies are better evidence of whether Bluesky works for you than any platform-wide estimate.
