How Do You Disable Quote Posts on Bluesky?

  1. Open the composer. Start a new post in the Bluesky app.
  2. Open interaction settings. Tap the interaction button below the text box, which reads Anyone can interact by default.
  3. Turn off quotes. Switch off the Allow quote posts toggle.
  4. Save and post. Tap Save and publish. Nobody can attach your post to a new quote.

The same panel controls who can reply, so this is a good moment to decide both. Our guide to Bluesky reply settings walks through each reply option.

How do you turn off quotes on a post you already published?

Open the three-dot menu on your post and choose the option to edit interaction settings, then switch quotes off. From then on the quote button is unavailable to other people. It does not reach back and remove quotes that were made before you changed it; detach those individually.

How Do You Turn Off Quotes for Every Bluesky Post?

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Moderation, then Interaction settings.
  3. Turn off quote posts.

New posts then start with quotes off, and you can flip the toggle back on in the composer for any single post you do want shared that way. Old posts keep the setting they were published with.

How Do You Detach a Quote on Bluesky?

Detaching is the tool for quotes that already exist – the usual case when a post gets picked up and dunked on.

  1. Find the quote. Quotes of your post appear in your notifications, and you can open the full list from your post's quote count.
  2. Open the three-dot menu on the quote (their post, not yours).
  3. Choose Detach quote and confirm.

Only the author of the quoted post sees this option, and only on quotes of their own posts. If the quote count is large, there is no "detach all" button; work through the list, or turn off quotes on the post first so the list stops growing.

What Does the Quoter See After You Detach?

  • Their post stays. Their text, images and replies are untouched. Detaching does not delete anything they wrote.
  • Your post is replaced. Where your post was embedded, readers see a placeholder saying the post was removed by its author, instead of your text.
  • Your post no longer counts it. The detached quote stops appearing in your post's quote list.
  • No notification. They are not told, but the placeholder is visible to them and everyone else, so assume they will notice.

In practice this takes the air out of a quote-dunk: a reply-guy's "lol look at this" with nothing to look at. If the quoter is a persistent problem, combine it with a block. A block between two accounts also stops the embedded post from being shown in either direction.

What Can't Bluesky Quote Settings Stop?

Quote controls are good at one thing – embedding – and do nothing about the rest:

  • Screenshots. Anyone can screenshot a public post and post the image.
  • Links. People can paste your post's URL as text. In the official app a pasted post link would normally turn into a quote, which your setting blocks, but the link itself still works.
  • Reposts. Reposting is not quoting and is not affected. Readers who don't want to see reposts can mute them; posters can't stop them.
  • Visibility. Turning quotes off doesn't hide the post. Bluesky posts are public – our explainer Can you make your Bluesky account private? covers what you can and can't restrict.

How Does It Work? The Postgate Record

Quote settings live in a record called app.bsky.feed.postgate, stored in your repository next to the post it governs, with the same record key. It does two jobs:

{
  "$type": "app.bsky.feed.postgate",
  "post": "at://did:plc:abc123/app.bsky.feed.post/3lxyz...",
  "embeddingRules": [
    { "$type": "app.bsky.feed.postgate#disableRule" }
  ],
  "detachedEmbeddingUris": [
    "at://did:plc:xyz789/app.bsky.feed.post/3lqrs..."
  ],
  "createdAt": "2026-10-06T14:00:00.000Z"
}
  • embeddingRules with a disableRule means quotes are off.
  • detachedEmbeddingUris lists the quotes you detached. Reattaching removes the URI from the list.

The quoter's post is a record in their repository, and you cannot change it. What you control is whether the AppView will show your post inside it. Bluesky's AppView reads your postgate and renders the placeholder instead. That's the same split between repositories and AppViews described in our ATProtocol architecture guide, and it is why the postgate is public: any app needs to read it to render quotes correctly. Reply limits work the same way, using a sibling record called a threadgate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you turn off quote posts on Bluesky?

Yes. In the composer, open the interaction settings and switch off quote posts. You can also do it after posting from the post's three-dot menu, or make it the default for every new post in Settings, Moderation, Interaction settings.

What does detach quote mean on Bluesky?

Detaching removes your post from a quote someone else made. Their post stays up with their own words, but where your post was embedded it now shows that the quoted post was removed by its author.

Does the person know if I detach their quote?

They are not notified, but they or anyone reading their post will see that your post is no longer shown inside it, so it is not secret.

Does disabling quotes remove existing quote posts?

Turning quotes off blocks new quotes. Quotes that already exist should be detached one by one from each quote's three-dot menu.

Can people still share my post if quotes are off?

Yes. People can still repost it, like it, reply if your reply settings allow, copy its link or take a screenshot. Turning quotes off only stops your post being embedded in a new post.

Can I undo detaching a quote on Bluesky?

Yes. Detaching is recorded in a public postgate record you control, so you can reattach a quote from the same menu if you change your mind.
