Short answer: sign in with another account, choose Mastodon, enter your server's address, and approve Skyscraper on your server's page. It takes about a minute, and then your Mastodon home timeline, notifications and messages sit alongside your Bluesky account in the same app, on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Mastodon support arrived in Skyscraper 1.8 and is in beta. Here's how to set it up, what you get, and where the two networks do things differently.
The Quick Answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does Skyscraper support Mastodon? | Yes, since 1.8, as a beta |
| What do I need to sign in? | Your server's address, such as mastodon.social |
| Do I type my password into Skyscraper? | No. You approve the app on your server's own page |
| Is it free? | Mastodon sign-in is part of Skyscraper Pro |
| Can I keep my Bluesky account? | Yes, and read both together |
How to Add Your Mastodon Account
- If you already use Skyscraper with Bluesky, open Settings and choose to sign in with another account. If you're setting up for the first time, you'll see the same choice on the sign-in screen.
- Pick Login via Mastodon. Skyscraper shows a short notice that Mastodon support is in beta. Accept it to continue.
- If you aren't a Skyscraper Pro subscriber yet, the Pro screen appears first, since Mastodon sign-in is a Pro feature.
- Enter your instance: the address of your Mastodon server, such as
mastodon.social. It's the part after the second @ in your full handle. - Your server opens its own authorization page. Sign in there if asked, and approve Skyscraper.
- You're returned to the app. The first time, a short tour covers how Mastodon works.
If Skyscraper can't find your server, it says so. The usual cause is a typo. If your server doesn't use HTTPS (rare, usually a self-hosted test server), type the address starting with http://.
Don't Have a Mastodon Account Yet?
You need one first, and it lives on a server you choose. joinmastodon.org lists servers by topic and region, and your account works with people on every other server. Skyscraper has a “New to Mastodon” explainer built in for the basics.
What You Get
- Your home timeline, notifications and Explore
- Direct messages. Mastodon DMs are posts that only the people mentioned can see
- Lists, bookmarks and favorites
- Polls, content warnings and custom emoji
- Scheduled posts
- Push notifications
Bluesky to Mastodon: What's Different
| On Bluesky | On Mastodon |
|---|---|
| Like | Favorite |
| Repost | Boost |
Handle like name.bsky.social | Handle like @name@server |
| 300-character posts | Longer posts: the limit is set by each server, and 500 is the default |
| Custom feeds and starter packs | Lists and hashtags; no algorithmic feeds |
| Labels and moderation services | Content warnings, plus your server's rules |
| One identity everywhere | One account per server |
Your Mastodon server also decides things Bluesky doesn't, like character limits and how many images a post can have. When you write a post, Skyscraper tells you if it's over a limit. A Mastodon post can carry a poll or media, but not both, and one video or a set of images, but not both.
Is It Finished?
Not yet, and the app says so itself: Mastodon support is in beta, and it's meant to supplement the Bluesky experience. Some features may be missing or incomplete. If something doesn't work as you'd expect, tell us, since beta feedback is what shapes the next version.
Reading Both Together
Once you have both accounts, you can switch between them, or combine them. The Unified timeline merges every account's Following feed into one, and Cross-Post lets you write one post and send it to several accounts. That's the next post: Bluesky and Mastodon in one timeline.
